Lasting Power of Attorney

A lasting power of attorney (LPA) is a legal document in which you appoint one or more persons, known as attorneys, to act on your behalf when you are unable to act for yourself.

What is a Lasting Power of Attorney?

There are two types of LPA:

  • For Financial Decisions

As the name suggests this would give your attorney the authority to deal with your property and finances.

  • For Health & Care Decisions

This would give your attorney the authority to make health and welfare decisions on your behalf when you lack the mental capacity to make those decisions yourself. If you so choose, this could extend to giving or refusing consent to receiving life-sustaining treatment.
